Chelsea are one of the clubs linked with signing Bayern Munich youngster Mathys Tel in the final few days of the January transfer window, but he still played for the German club last night in the Champions League.
Bayern attacker Mathys Tel, 19, is at the centre of transfer speculation this week.
Chelsea will resume talks about signing Tel after the teenage forward decided he wants to leave Bayern in this window. Arsenal have joined the transfer race for Bayern’s Tel, though.
The Chelsea squad does already include plenty of talent in the attacking positions of the pitch, but could they be about to add another exciting youngster?
In terms of Tel’s profile, the versatile Frenchman usually plays as a left-winger or a centre-forward. He started on the wing last night for Bayern in Europe.

Mathys Tel statistics in Bayern Munich performance, remarkable comparison with Jadon Sancho
It was a bit of a surprise to see Tel named in the starting line-up on Wednesday night during Bayern’s 3-1 home win over Slovan Bratislava in the Champions League group stages.
The youngster came into the XI on the left wing and made the most of just over an hour on the pitch.
| Minutes played | Goals | Assists | Total shots | Big chances missed | Touches in opposition box | Successful dribbles | Match rating |
| 62 | 0 | 0 | 7 | 1 | 9 | 1/1 (100%) | 7.4 |
The most eye-catching statistic from Tel’s latest Bayern display was the fact he attempted seven shots during the game. It’s worth remembering he’s not played a lot of football this season due to the competition for places, too.
It makes for even more interesting reading when you compare it to what Chelsea’s Jadon Sancho has done recently.
| Fixture | Minutes played | Total shots |
| Manchester City 3-1 Chelsea | 73 | 1 |
| Chelsea 3-1 Wolverhampton Wanderers | 28 | 0 |
| Chelsea 2-2 Bournemouth | 90 | 2 |
| Chelsea 5-0 Morecambe | 45 | 1 |
| Crystal Palace 1-1 Chelsea | 86 | 1 |
| Ipswich Town 2-0 Chelsea | 25 | 1 |
| Chelsea 1-2 Fulham | 90 | 1 |
In Sancho’s last seven appearances across all competitions, he’s registered seven shots in total, the same amount as Tel in yesterday’s match for Bayern.
It’s the clearest indicator that the Blues left-winger isn’t shooting enough in matches. Chelsea staff have urged Sancho to shoot more, but we’re still waiting to see more of that side of his game.

Should Chelsea go all out for Mathys Tel?
Tel is one of the names linked with Chelsea in the final days of the January window, so should they push hard to try get him?
On paper, we’re not convinced that the Bayern teenager is the right profile for the Blues. His versatility to play on the wing or as a striker is intriguing, but he’s still very much a work in progress and may be a project for the long-term.
As shown in the data above, Tel does fire plenty of shots at goal and that’s a reason to put a big tick by his name. He’s scored 16 goals in 83 appearances since joining Bayern in 2022, but he’s not actually scored so far this season.
Chelsea’s priority right now should be finding an out-and-out striker who’s ready to hit the ground running.
Chelsea may be ‘busy’ in the remainder of the January window, but they’ll need to get a move on because it’s been a slow month so far.
