Mauricio Pochettino and his coaching staff have only just realised the size of the task they’ve taken on at Chelsea.

That is according to Miguel Delaney’s newsletter.

It is understood that Mauricio Pochettino and his staff are only just figuring out that success at Stamford Bridge won’t be immediate. Instead, they’ve embarked on a project that the club’s owners want to see through by investing in huge potential for the future.

The report explains that there’s been a realignment of the goals at Chelsea under the ownership during the past 18 months.

In fairness, you can tell from the opening weeks of this season that Chelsea are a long way off it.

There may have been huge financial investment from the hierarchy to assemble this squad, but this is an inexperienced group with so much growing to do still. They’re not going to get anywhere near the big boys until there’s a 20-goal striker at the club, too!

The immediate focus should be on the fact that the Blues are only a point above both Everton and Luton Town right now. They’ve got a chance to climb up the table when they play their game in hand away to Fulham on Monday night, though.

We need to see much improved results in the Premier League before we’re sucked into a real mess this season. If the league form can improve, there’s still every chance the club can do something in the cup.

Pochettino’s side will be through to the Carabao Cup quarter-finals if they can navigate their way past Championship club Blackburn Rovers in the fourth round, so perhaps silverware isn’t impossible this season after all.

Just like the players, the fans are trying to adjust to the fact the expectation may not be as high this campaign as usual. Hopefully, our return to the top is a lot closer than everybody thinks once this young squad gels and develops.
