Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino has confirmed that he has spoken to his players about their ill-discipline this season.

Chelsea have picked up 47 yellow cards, the most in the Premier League, and have also had three players sent off after Conor Gallagher’s dismissal against Brighton & Hove Albion last Sunday.

Mauricio Pochettino has now told LondonWorld and the rest of the English media that he has had a meeting with his team about their disciplinary record.

Despite Gallagher’s red card, the Blues were still able to beat Brighton 3-2, closing the gap on tonight’s opponents Manchester United, who lost 1-0 against Newcastle United in their last outing.

Mauricio Pochettino tells his Chelsea players to be more clever

Pochettino has urged his Chelsea side to start showing more sense on the pitch as they continue to rack up cautions.

Speaking to LondonWorld and other outlets, the Argentine said: “Today we were talking in the meeting and we showed the clips of the yellow cards. There are too many because they changed the rules this season. We touch and we put the ball from here to there, and that is a tick that we need to change. We need to be clever.

“You upset the player, you get a yellow card, and then in some action that can happen in the game, you can receive another yellow. We receive too many like this. Or even we were talking about Nicolas Jackson, the yellow card because of complaining to the referee.

“The opponent made a foul and didn’t receive a yellow card. But you complain about ‘Why is that not a yellow card?’ And it’s ‘Oh, yellow card for you.’ We receive like this. We need to be clever and improve in this area. We cannot be silly to repeat, repeat, repeat the same mistakes.”

Chelsea players have to listen to Mauricio Pochettino

Pochettino is obviously right here. Chelsea players need to start acting smarter and stop picking up such silly bookings.

How many times has Jackson been cautioned for dissent this season? Too many and it has seen him serve a suspension.

Reece James, the club captain, was recently sent off for two pathetic yellow cards as well. It does not help the team’s cause, a team that have really struggled in the current campaign.

Pochettino made it clear that he was disappointed after the right-back was dismissed in the 4-1 defeat to Newcastle United. Hopefully James and the rest of his team-mates take what their manager is saying on board.

Chelsea are really hurting themselves with all of these red cards and suspensions. If they still want to qualify for the Champions League, then it is one area where they are going to have to fix up.
