What Mauricio Pochettino now needs to do to avoid sack at Chelsea after Carabao Cup final loss

Chelsea have just lost the Carabao Cup final to Liverpool and are 11th in the Premier League table.

In the past, Chelsea probably would have sacked their manager.

However, according to journalist Ben Jacobs, owners Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali want to give Mauricio Pochettino time. In his column for Si Phillips Talks Chelsea, Jacobs claimed that if the Argentine can get through the next four fixtures, it is “almost certain” that he will not be dismissed before the end of the season.

Chelsea’s next three games in the Premier League are not easy, though. They take on Brentford and Newcastle United, who have both already beaten them this term, then Arsenal.

Before then, the Blues face Leeds United in the fifth round of the FA Cup.

Should Mauricio Pochettino be sacked after Carabao Cup final loss?

No, if Chelsea get rid of Pochettino it is going to be because of the team’s league form and not losing a final against Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool.

Coming into the season, winning the League Cup would not have been the Blues’ main objective. Rather, that would have been qualifying for the Champions League.

However, Chelsea are nowhere near the top four, currently finding themselves in the bottom half of the table. If they drop any lower, then the board will have a decision to make.

But having spent so much money last summer, some may feel that Pochettino deserves his judgement now for the club being in 11th place.

That is quite fair, as the Argentine has a squad that is more than good enough to be higher than 11th place. Ultimately, if Pochettino is dismissed, he can have no complaints really, other than Chelsea’s injury crisis that has eased up recently.

And an injury crisis, which Liverpool have had to deal with, never stopped them from getting the job done at Wembley yesterday, so Pochettino is running out of excuses now.
