There’s no doubt that Chelsea star Reece James is one of the biggest talking points at Chelsea because everyone knows he’s a world-class player when he’s fit and firing. Therefore, it’s interesting to hear what’s being said about him during pre-season from within the camp.

Reece James, 24, is currently with the squad during the pre-season tour of the United States as the players adapt to life under Enzo Maresca. It’s worth remembering that the Englishman is suspended for the opening three games of the 2024/25 season, though.

In terms of what’s happening on the pitch, James has been playing as an inverted right-back that drops into midfield in Chelsea’s pre-season friendlies so far. Speaking recently via Chelsea’s YouTube channel, James said his new position suits him.

There’s still been no official confirmation that he will continue in his role as the club’s captain, albeit he’s worn the armband so far in pre-season.

Chelsea notice Reece James is carrying himself much better as a leader

According to The Athletic, Chelsea’s camp have noted how James is conducting himself so far this summer and believe he’s showing a lot more confidence in the leadership position. It’s perhaps not the biggest surprise when you consider last year was his first season as the Blues skipper.

It is understood that James recently organised an evening for the club’s new signings to sing initiation songs in front of the rest of the squad. Apparently, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, signed from Leicester City, sang ‘Build Me Up Buttercup’ by The Foundations.

The report says that the 24-year-old played a key role setting it up and it’s a sign of how his presence within the group has grown.

Chelsea are crying out for leadership

It’s pretty obvious this young Chelsea group is in desperate need of more leadership and know-how. Remarkably, 29-year-old Raheem Sterling is the oldest outfield player currently at Stamford Bridge.

James is an academy graduate that knows the club inside out and allowing him to continue as captain makes the most sense. Of course, he needs to try improve his fitness and discipline to be on the pitch as much as possible, but it’s encouraging to hear what he’s like away from the field as well.

Now that Thiago Silva has departed Chelsea, it’s time for others to really step up and lead this squad.
