Chelsea recorded a vital win at home to West Ham at the start of the week, but Levi Colwill has been vocal in criticising his own performance in the London derby.
Chelsea came from behind on Monday night to beat West Ham 2-1 in the Premier League. As a result, the Blues climbed up to fourth in the league table with an important three points.
Enzo Maresca’s side went behind when West Ham attacker Jarrod Bowen scored first for the visitors, producing a clinical finish after Levi Colwill gifted possession away. The 21-year-old Blues centre-back delivered a poor pass backwards into the path of the goalscorer.
Chelsea defender Colwill said he made a “terrible mistake” versus West Ham, but praised his teammates for bailing him out of trouble in the comeback victory.

Journalist Rahman Osman observed in FourFourTwo that Colwill received special attention from a few Chelsea teammates straight after Chelsea’s win over West Ham.
The report says that Blues stars Benoit Badiashile, Wesley Fofana and Romeo Lavia waited for Colwill at full-time, who was at fault for West Ham’s goal, to console him with hugs as he made his way off the pitch.
It speaks volumes that a trio of injured Chelsea players were first on the scene to support Colwill after his individual error. In fairness, the Englishman has probably been the most consistent central defender at the club over the course of the season so far.
Fans have criticised a lack of identity within the Chelsea squad in the last couple of years, but there are plenty of signs that this young group are gelling and uniting together.
Levi Colwill crucial to Enzo Maresca since the start
Even as Colwill battles through a tough run of form, it’s clear that Blues manager Maresca is a big fan. It would be a real shock if he’s dropped from the best starting line-up.
Maresca viewed Colwill as a key player in his Chelsea side before the season even started, which is why it’s no surprise that he’s been a mainstay in the heart of defence, starting 22 out of 24 Premier League games.
The young ball-playing centre-half has all the physical and technical attributes of a modern day top-class defender. For Colwill, he just needs to keep his concentration high on the pitch and cut out errors as he matures into a more complete player.
It’s obvious that he would benefit massively from playing next to a truly experienced defender, but the Blues don’t really have any of them in the club.
