What Todd Boehly did when Raheem Sterling was subbed off in Chelsea 3-0 Luton Town

Raheem Sterling shone at Stamford Bridge last Friday as Chelsea recorded a 3-0 win over Luton Town in front of Todd Boehly.

The American was surely relieved to see the Blues pick up a first win of the 2023/24 campaign after another summer of heavy spending.

Chelsea secured all three points largely thanks to Raheem Sterling – who scored twice against Luton Town – and The Athletic noticed what Todd Boehly did straight after Mauricio Pochettino substituted the electric forward…

What’s the story?

Well, the England international has been back to his best this season after a difficult debut campaign at Chelsea.

Sterling scored just six goals in 28 Premier League appearances last term following a £50m move from Manchester City.

However – in just three games this season – the Chelsea No.7 has already scored two Premier League goals, and his display against Luton Town moved Boehly to a standing ovation.

The Athletic believe the 49-year-old rose to his feet as Pochettino withdrew Sterling in the 89th minute last week, also applauding the 28-year-old after he tore Rob Edwards’ side apart.

Raheem Sterling shows the importance of coaching at Chelsea

Many Chelsea fans would have had Sterling down as someone who needed replacing in the starting XI after his miserable 2022/23 campaign.

However, the Kingston-born forward’s resurgence under Pochettino – a manager known for putting his arm around players and showing a human touch – just goes to show the importance of coaching at Chelsea.

Yes, the Blues can afford to sign pretty much anyone in the market right now under Boehly, put developing these signings and pushing them to reach their best is something Chelsea have struggled with over the years.

Pochettino has clearly started to turn that around with Sterling, and hopefully, the Argentine can transform others who faltered last season, such as Conor Gallagher and Mykhailo Mudryk.
