Chelsea returned to winning ways in the Premier League with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Newcastle United.
The Blues started really well at Stamford Bridge, taking the lead in the first half through a glorious counter attack.
Nicolas Jackson put the final touches on a move which was set in motion by a brilliant Cole Palmer pass. The England international took just seconds of the second half to find the net too.
Before they retook the lead there was some serious frustration building inside Stamford Bridge, with the home fans believing a lot of refereeing decisions were going against them.
Palmer had already had a goal disallowed for a tight offside, while Newcastle’s equally tight decision ended up with a goal being given.
Jason Tindall amused by Enzo Maresca’s reaction to refereeing in Chelsea vs Newcastle
The refereeing clearly ticked off Enzo Maresca too, with him unable to hide his frustration in the first half.
According to Kieran Gill, this seemed to amuse Newcastle assistant Jason Tindall.
He said: “Enzo Maresca showed his anger in that first half. Smacked his seat after one of Simon Hooper’s questionable calls (and Newcastle assistant Jason Tindall started laughing at him). Vented to staff after Robert Sanchez gave the ball away for the umpteenth time.”
Reece James sends message to Maresca
Maresca will be delighted with what he saw from Reece James on the pitch after publicly calling out his leadership skills ahead of this game.
It was a real captain’s performance from the England international at the back, with Levi Colwill also impressing in a number of key moments.
Tindall and Maresca are going to reunited in just a few days’ time when the Blues make the trip to the North East to take on their same opponents in the Carabao Cup.
There are likely to be a number of changes made by Chelsea for that game, with the likes of Jadon Sancho and Marc Cucurella hoping for a start after dropping out of the Premier League side.
