Why Enzo Maresca is ‘absolutely fuming’ at Chelsea ahead of transfer deadline day

With just hours left of the summer transfer window, it has been said that Enzo Maresca is not too happy with Chelsea right now.

Maresca is the first manager since Todd Boehly and co took over that has made it into a second campaign at Stamford Bridge, and certainly earned this with two trophies and a return to the Champions League.

It is therefore right for the manager to assume that he was going to be sufficiently backed in the transfer market, and the Blues have once again spent big money to address the playing squad.

Joao Pedro, Liam Delap and Jamie Gittens are amongst those already signed by the club, although the Blues are currently sweating over Delap’s fitness after he was forced off in the win against Fulham due to injury.

Enzo Maresca ‘fuming’ at Chelsea due to lack of transfer activity

However, it appears that the manager has not had every requirement met by the club in the market, and this is causing frustration as the window nears its deadline.

Simon Phillips has actually claimed that Maresca is ‘absolutely fuming’ that the club have not signed a new centre-back this summer, as well as a goalkeeper.

He said on his Substack: “One SPTC Source has said that Maresca ‘is absolutely fuming’ right now due to a lack of activity to bring what he has asked for.

“We understand that Maresca wanted to see a new goalkeeper, centre back, left winger, and a striker arrive this summer. Maresca asked the club to prioritise the attack first, which they have done, but he also expected reinforcements at the back as well.

“Maresca has also publicly said he wants a new centre back in after the Levi Colwill injury. But we’ve heard there has been a lack of progress on a new centre back late on in the window, and it’s the same for a new goalkeeper.

“There had been some very slight hope that Chelsea still sign both, and the club have still been exploring the centre back market and have even been putting names forward to go for this week. But as of right now (things can change and happen fast) nothing has advanced for a new centre back to arrive.”

Maresca’s public cry for new centre-back

After Levi Colwill was ruled out for the majority of the 2025/26 season before a ball was kicked, Chelsea were expected by many to race into action and sign a replacement.

However, the only transfer activity involving a defender since then has seen them part ways with Renato Veiga on a permanent basis.

Maresca has publicly stated he wants a new centre-back due to the role Colwill does for his side, however it looks as if he is going to have to rely on those who are already at the club.

He will have been buoyed by the performance of Trevoh Chalobah against Fulham, with him putting in a fantastic display at the back.
