Why Levi Colwill was fighting within two minutes of Chelsea’s pre-season match vs Wrexham

For one Chelsea player, the 2-2 draw against Wrexham seemed to be anything but a friendly overnight.

Levi Colwill was handed a start in the left-back position, a role he was perhaps looking to avoid after featuring in it predominantly under Mauricio Pochettino.

However, a backline that consisted of Benoit Badiashile, Tosin Adarabioyo and Reece James didn’t concede during their time on the pitch, with that certainly being a positive to take from the first outing of the summer.

This defence will of course not be starting the opening game of the season at Stamford Bridge, with the club captain suspended for the opening games of the campaign.

Enzo Maresca will likely not have been too impressed with what he saw from the England international within just the first two minutes, with him losing his composure following an early late foul from James McClean.

In a video published by ESPN on Twitter, the Chelsea man grabs the shirt of his opponent in a threatening manner, after originally pushing him away.

Colwill was replaced in the second half by Ben Chilwell, who took up a more central position for the first real time in his career.

It is likely that Marc Cucurella picks up the role of starting left-back by the time the Premier League season gets underway with the visit of Manchester City.

Colwill hoping to return to centre-back

This will see Colwill make the move to the centre of defence, with it remaining to be seen who will partner him at the back.

Adarabioyo has impressed greatly in training so far since joining the club, and was handed the chance to start his first game for the club last night.

He will be facing pressure from Wesley Fofana though, who made his long-awaited return to the side after his serious knee injury.

One player who is likely at the moment to not feature at all is Trevoh Chalobah, with him left off the tour of the United States due to the ambition to sell him this summer.
