‘You don’t know’: Paul Merson says it’s hard to judge just how good £10m Chelsea player will become

Paul Merson has explained it’s difficult to judge just how good Chelsea youngster David Datro Fofana will become.

The Blues were so busy in last month’s transfer window that some signings may have gone under the radar, with a lot of the spotlight focused on new recruits Mykhailo Mudryk and Enzo Fernandez.

However, 20-year-old Fofana is a really interesting new individual to examine.

Graham Potter’s side paid up to £10million to sign the young striker from Molde in January, where he scored 24 goals in 65 appearances at first-team level.

The centre-forward is now part of the senior group at Chelsea during the second half of the season, and he played a cameo role from the bench in last week’s Premier League draw with Fulham.

Sky Sports pundit Merson doesn’t think there should be too much pressure on Fofana to hit the ground running in the Chelsea XI.

In fact, he feels the 20-year-old is a hard one to judge:

“They did bring in David Datro Fofana, but you don’t know if he’s going to be top drawer or not. It’s a big ask for him to come straight in and score 20 goals a season in the hardest league in the world. It’s a hard one. Everybody wants a centre forward, but Chelsea do need to get one,” Merson told Sky Sports.

In our view, Fofana should be given his first Chelsea start this Saturday during the league trip to West Ham.

It’s definitely right to say predicting Fofana’s career path is a tricky one, because he’s still relatively unexperienced and so young.

However, it looks like a huge window has opened up for him in the next few months to try make a name for himself in the first team.

Most of the Chelsea fanbase will agree that the club still need a goal machine to lead the line, but what if they’ve already got one in their ranks just waiting to explode?
