'Fire in his eyes': Mason Mount says he absolutely loves playing with 29-year-old Chelsea player
Chelsea’s Mason Mount praises Antonio Rudiger yesterday after he made his final appearance for the club.
Rudiger, 29, will leave Stamford Bridge this summer after five action-packed years as a Blues player.
The German defender ended his Chelsea career on Sunday by starting in the 2-1 home win against Watford on the final day of the Premier League season. Incidentally, he received a farewell message from Tammy Abraham on the weekend.
Mount ended up winning the club’s player of the year award after another season where he’s grown into a more senior role. However, centre-back Rudiger has been right up there in terms of best performers during the 2021/22 campaign.
Mount praises Rudiger
Blues attacking midfielder Mount showered Rudiger with praise in his farewell message to him.
It’s obvious that he’s an extremely popular player in the dressing room that’s going to leave a massive hole at Stamford Bridge next season.
“What a guy he is. A top, top guy,” Mount said when discussing Rudiger.
“Every time you’re on the pitch with him, you look around and you can see the fire in his eyes to want to compete. He’s there behind you if there’s something that happens, he’s straight there trying to back your teammates.
“On the pitch that person and totally different off it, an absolute gentleman. A pleasure to play with him over the last couple of years, I’ve learned a lot from him. We wish him all the best until we play against him.”
Havertz can bring the heat
It’s going to be interesting to see which Chelsea players really step up to the mark to be their team’s ‘hard man’.
Most clubs usually have that one player at the front of all confrontations, something Rudiger’s done so well over the years to protect his teammates.
Interestingly, Blues forward Kai Havertz may be the individual to step into Rudiger’s shoes in that aspect.
The 22-year-old’s already had a couple of bust-ups on the pitch, including a head-to-head with Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold this season.
