Mason Mount has told Soccer AM that Ben Chilwell told him to look to catch the goalkeeper out when he stepped up for his free kick against Aston Villa.
The England international got his Premier League account up and running in the 2-0 victory at Villa Park, scoring either side of half-time to secure all three points.
Mount’s second goal in particular caught a lot of attention. The midfielder struck a sensational free-kick to kill off any Villa hope of a comeback.
The strike was aimed to the goalkeeper’s side, with Emi Martinez taking the gamble early that he would try to beat the wall.
Mount has claimed that this was no coincidence, with him and Chilwell doing their research on what the Argentine likes to do.
Chilwell told Mount what to do against Villa
He said: “We do our research before the game, so I kind of had a feeling that he might have gambled, the keeper. We look at what the keeper’s do and their normal reactions, and I was on the ball with Chilly. I said to Chilly ‘where should I go?’ And he goes ‘just go keeper’s side.’
“I put it that side and as I’ve hit it I’ve seen him gamble, and I knew I had a good amount of pace on dip on it to go in.
“Over the last 2/3 seasons, you analyse the keeper and try to take advantage of it.”
The fixture was just a sign of the improvements Chelsea fans have seen of Mount under the new manager Graham Potter.
His importance to the former Brighton man is easy to see, with him starting all but one of the fixtures since he took over.
The turn in form will also be a positive sign for England fans, with Mount sure to be an important player for Gareth Southgate when the World Cup gets underway next month.
