Mason Mount's emotional reaction as Chelsea coach leaves to join Lampard at Everton
Mason Mount has delivered an emotional reaction after Chelsea assistant coach Joe Edwards completed a move away from Stamford Bridge yesterday.
Edwards, 35, has exited the Blues to join Frank Lampard’s coaching staff at Premier League rivals Everton.
Ex-Chelsea boss Lampard was named as Everton’s new manager on Monday, and he’s now reuniting with Edwards at Goodison Park.
For Edwards, he ends a 27-year association with Chelsea. This included being part of the staff under Thomas Tuchel that helped win the Champions League last season, along with playing an important role in the development squads in the past.
Chelsea star Mount has posted a heartfelt message on social media to Edwards following his departure.
“Thank you for everything you’ve done for me and the club, Joe. You had a massive influence on my development from the academy to the first team. You’ll be truly missed not just as a coach, but as a person! Good luck in your new venture, mate,” Mount wrote on his Instagram story.
Chelsea need to keep academy path open
It’s important that the Blues keep allowing their upcoming talents a path into the first team.
There has been a great connection between the senior squad and youth sides in recent years, something that can’t go away.
The likes of Mount and James are worth millions of pounds after going through the academy system at Cobham, and hopefully there are more to follow in their footsteps. It’s clear the environment has been great for youngsters making the step up.
Incidentally, it was great to see Chelsea’s Under-18s beat Liverpool 4-3 in the FA Youth Cup on the weekend.
