‘A problem’: Tim Sherwoods suggests the position Chelsea need to strengthen this month

Tim Sherwood has recommended Chelsea acquire another striker in January.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Sherwood named the number nine position as the area of the field that Graham Potter needs to improve.

Potter’s options up front are admittedly rather limited right now.

Armando Broja’s season-ending injury meant at the time the only senior member of the squad left to fill this role was Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

After Aubameyang was substituted as a substitute against Manchester City on Thursday night, fears about the forward line grow thicker.

Fortunately, just a few days later, Chelsea officially unveiled the signing of David Datro Fofana.

The 20-year-old’s £10m move from Molde was announced on Saturday, just 24 hours before the next meeting with Pep Guardiola’s side in the FA Cup.

Do Chelsea need another striker?

Fofana was thrust straight into training, but his arrival might be too premature to face City this afternoon.

Therefore, if fit and not fatigued, Aubameyang will potentially play through the middle at the Etihad.

This is a scenario that Sherwood did not see as a positive one for Chelsea now or for the future.

“It’s a disjointed squad. I think they’ve got so many players in forward areas who are similar quality. I don’t think they’ve got an outstanding striker, that’s been a problem for them for a couple of years now,” said the former Tottenham Hotspur manager.

If Aubameyang fails to deliver again on the grand stage, Potter may be forced to turn to Fofana.

His goals for Molde made Boehly bring him to South West London, but scoring in Norway is nothing like doing it in England.

He will learn that very quickly if he is picked for a Premier League matchday.

Chelsea’s new recruit might even find that out in a few hours.
