'Close the door': ESPN pundit claims 23-year-old Chelsea's career could be over if Sterling signs
Steve Nicol suggests Christian Pulisic’s Chelsea career could be over if Raheem Sterling moves to Stamford Bridge this summer.
Pulisic, who’s had three seasons as a Blues player, is someone that still divides opinion among the fanbase.
The 23-year-old attacker can be electric on his day with real pace and trickery, but isn’t always the most clinical around the penalty box.
Interestingly, Thomas Tuchel’s side are strongly linked with strengthening in the wide positions during the current transfer window.
Sterling to Chelsea
If Sterling joins the Blues, surely he’ll arrive as a nailed-on starter in Tuchel’s line-up.
It means the current crop of attackers such as Pulisic, Hakim Ziyech, Callum Hudson-Odoi and Timo Werner will need to think about their roles.
ESPN pundit Nicol reckons Pulisic may actually need to search for a way out of Stamford Bridge. The American winger was in and out of the XI last season, so it’ll become even tougher if Sterling joins the forward options.
“These two transfers, if they go through (Sterling and Raphinha), will absolutely close the door on Christian’s chances of getting a regular place in the Chelsea side. It’s no use being at Chelsea if you’re not playing. Unfortunately, I think that means Pulisic should be getting his agent and looking around to see if he can get a good move,” Nicol told ESPN.
Obviously, Pulisic needs to try start next season strong to give himself momentum going into representing the United States at the winter World Cup.
The ex-Borussia Dortmund talent just hasn’t shown the consistency yet in a Chelsea shirt to truly convince Tuchel, which is frustrating because the chance was there last season.
It’s been reported the Blues would be willing to include him in a swap deal to sign Juventus defender Matthijs de Ligt.
