‘Completely different wavelengths’: Jamie Redknapp says two Chelsea players looked like strangers next to each other

Jamie Redknapp claims that the Chelsea combination of Romelu Lukaku and Timo Werner completely failed last night against Arsenal.

The Blues started a front two of Lukaku and Werner in yesterday’s 4-2 defeat to Arsenal, with teammate Mason Mount dropping into a number 10 position just behind.

Despite the disappointing result, in-form attacker Werner did get on the scoresheet with a deflected goal. In contrast, Lukaku was substituted off the pitch on the hour mark after making very little impact.

Sky Sports pundit Redknapp highlighted the lack of chemistry between the Chelsea forwards as a real problem.

“Werner and Lukaku were just on completely different wavelengths. It’s like they’ve never played football together,” Redknapp told Sky Sports’ Main Event channel (9:57pm, 20 April).

Paul Merson said earlier this week Lukaku is struggling to connect with all his teammates on the pitch, something that’s quite noticeable when you look at his overall involvement in games.

The Lukaku-Werner combination hasn’t been a regular experiment this campaign, and don’t expect to see much more of it during the next month.

Surely, Kai Havertz will be in line for a recall from his manager Thomas Tuchel.

Attacking chemistry for Chelsea

There’s definitely a preferred trio in the Blues attack right now that’s impressing, albeit the defence has somewhat fallen apart at the same time.

A line-up that consists of Werner, Havertz and Mount is one that’s very pleasing on the eye.

Chelsea haven’t had that consistency in their forward line that many top clubs across Europe have, so hopefully this current trio can continue to grow together.

It’s worth mentioning it’s the same three that started last season’s Champions League final.
