Darren Bent says Graham Potter is playing 23-year-old Chelsea player in the wrong position

Darren Bent believes Graham Potter is using Kai Havertz incorrectly in the Chelsea line-up.

Havertz, 23, is a Blues player who’s received an extended run in recent months as the main centre-forward.

The Germany international is a left-footed attacker with plenty of individual talent, which prompted Chelsea to splash out £71million on him a few years ago.

His Champions League-winning goal aside, supporters have grown frustrated with his overall impact at Stamford Bridge.

Havertz’s contribution of six goals in 32 games so far this season looks very uninspiring when you consider he’s been the main No.9 leading the line.

TalkSPORT pundit Bent hasn’t been impressed by what he’s seen from Havertz, especially in the 2-0 defeat to Tottenham at the weekend.

However, he’s cutting him some slack because he thinks the Chelsea head coach is playing him out of position.

Bent highlights Potter continues to persist with Havertz at striker when he looks “too slow” to react to things.

“Kai Havertz at centre-forward is just not working… I don’t think centre-forward is his best position,” Bent told talkSPORT.

“When you look at him play [against Tottenham], everything was almost reactive. He didn’t anticipate anything. He was always half a yard too slow.”

Andy Townsend recently suggested Havertz may never be good enough at Chelsea.

However, Potter is showing a lot of faith in the German by sticking with him in the XI.

In our view, Bent is spot on that Havertz doesn’t look like a natural out-and-out striker that can operate at the very top of the pitch.

He can be neat and tricky when he ghosts into pockets of space, but it leaves this current Blues side extremely weak around the penalty box.

We’d much prefer to see him in a No.10 position.
