TalkSPORT pundit worried £71m Chelsea player may never be good enough

Andy Townsend is worried that Chelsea’s Kai Havertz may never be quite good enough.

Havertz has cemented himself in Blues folklore for scoring a Champions League winning goal a couple of years ago, but the patience of supporters is starting to wear thin with him.

The 23-year-old attacker hasn’t scored enough times in his two-and-a-half year Chelsea career for someone with his quality, netting 29 goals in 123 appearances.

Also, there’s the ongoing question about the German’s best position on the pitch. It’s been difficult at times for him in the striker position this season, plus we’ve seen him in a No.10 pocket and a wide role in the past.

TalkSPORT pundit Townsend has delivered a concerning assessment of £71million man Havertz.

For him, he’s not seen enough from the Germany international during his time in West London.

“We haven’t really seen Kai Havertz get me to a point where I think, ‘this kid is going to be the real deal’… I just don’t quite get it. I don’t quite see it,” Townsend told talkSPORT.

There are some Chelsea fans that want to back Havertz and stick with him because there’s clear individual ability.

It does feel like Graham Potter, as well as previous managers at Stamford Bridge, are shoehorning him into the starting XI at times.

Gianfranco Zola recently said Havertz is one of the Chelsea players he would have loved to play alongside, so there’s definitely something special about his game.

We wouldn’t be surprised if he fulfilled his true potential if he returned to Germany, though. Hopefully, there’s still time for him to come good at Chelsea.
