‘Got to better there’: Martin Keown questions Chelsea player’s ‘lazy’ involvement in Arsenal goal

Martin Keown quizzed Kai Havertz’s participation in the vital moment that eventually settled the London derby between Chelsea and Arsenal.

Speaking live on BT Sports after his former side claimed victory at Stamford Bridge, Keown grilled Havertz for failing to defend properly for the only goal of the game.

Mikel Arteta’s men will probably not score an easier goal all season.

A low corner flicked on at the near post simply whizzed past the flock of Chelsea players and straight onto the boot of the awaiting Gabriel.

As the red and white section of the crowd burst into celebration, those wearing blue on the pitch all stood and stared at one another in disbelief.

But who really was to blame for such a sloppy error?

According to Scott Parker and Keown, Havertz has plenty to answer for.

“I don’t know why Havertz has gone in that front zone. His starting position just creates that space (at the near post),” questioned Parker.

“Havertz has got to better there, hasn’t he? It’s a lazy leg,” continued Keown in the critiquing.

“He should’ve got a little bit deeper and come onto it rather than starting high and then running back,” responded Parker.

“Now he’s running back and the balls coming back and now he’s got lots of things to deal with, rather than if he starts in an early position forward, he can move forward to attack the ball.”

Havertz was guilty of some very dubious defending that allowed Arsenal a straightforward tap in.

The German international’s struggles were evident throughout the fixture, with the two-rival centre-backs often snuffing him out.

He and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang failed to link up as a front line, causing the latter to be subbed off early in the second-half.

Potter has to eradicate all these errors swiftly ahead of Wednesday’s League Cup clash with Manchester City.
