Andy Townsend thinks Chelsea boss Graham Potter could soon drop Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang from the starting line-up.

Aubameyang, who returned to the Premier League this summer with Chelsea, has three goals in five Blues appearances this season.

The centre-forward has made himself a regular at the start of Graham Potter’s reign, starting in four of his opening five matches as manager.

However, the 33-year-old does have competition in attack from teammates such as Kai Havertz and Armando Broja.

Potter could drop Aubameyang

TalkSPORT pundit Townsend suggests Aubameyang won’t always be a nailed-on starter, especially if Potter wants to add some extra energy to the XI.

“If he (Aubameyang) gets left out, I will be very interested to see his reaction. He will get left out. There will come a point where things aren’t going great and Graham might want to shake things up. He might think he needs a little bit more energy up the top line. I think he’s important for them, but I’m intrigued to know how it will go if it goes in the other direction,” Townsend told talkSPORT.

In fairness, the early signs are that Aubameyang won’t be budging from Chelsea’s best line-up in the near future.

He’s providing the clinical touch around the box that has been missing at Stamford Bridge for years, so there’s no need to take him out when he’s contributing so effectively.

The hectic fixture schedule in October is forcing Potter into changes on a game-to-game basis, but his early favourites are beginning to become clear. Aubameyang, along with the likes of Mason Mount, Kepa Arrizabalaga and Thiago Silva seem trusted already.

Described as an “important player” recently by Potter, Aubameyang can be quite pleased with how he’s doing on his return to London.

He has the edge over all other Blues forwards when it comes to natural finishing. Therefore, he’s a player you imagine Potter will always want to find room for in the team.
