BBC pundit praises Chelsea player's display in 1-0 Everton defeat

'He's been the one': BBC pundit says 26-year-old Chelsea player was a positive in Everton loss

Leon Osman singled out Chelsea’s Ruben Loftus-Cheek for praise during his performance in today’s defeat against Everton.

Chelsea now have just one win in their last four Premier League games after losing 1-0 at Goodison Park on Sunday.

Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford was in inspired form to keep out the visitors. In addition, Toffees forward Richarlison capitalised on a defensive mistake early in the second half to score the winner.

The result means Thomas Tuchel’s side are now looking over their shoulders even more nervously. The Blues sit third in the league standings, but fourth-placed Arsenal are only three points below them now. Also, fifth-placed Tottenham are five points behind Chelsea in their pursuit of the Champions League spots.

BBC pundit Osman did highlight Chelsea midfielder Loftus-Cheek as a positive in what was an underwhelming team performance.

“A real positive driving run from Loftus-Cheek again. He’s been the one in the centre of that field for Chelsea that has tried to make something happen,” Osman said on BBC Radio 5 Live during the first half of Everton vs Chelsea.

Rare Chelsea positive

In fairness, Loftus-Cheek was arguably the best of the bunch when it came to performances from Blues players this afternoon.

The 26-year-old showed a couple of eye-catching moments on the ball that were a complete throwback to some of the form he showed earlier in his career. He produced some spectacular dribbles to break the lines and power away from opposition players in the centre of the park.

If he returns to his very best, he can be such a weapon as a box-to-box central midfielder.

It was another glimpse this weekend into what he can do and this Chelsea team are desperately crying out for some magical sparks due to a lack of attacking firepower.

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel claimed this week he wants Loftus-Cheek to unleash the “monster” in him. It would be interesting to hear what Tuchel made of his efforts today.

Unfortunately, Tuchel was not best pleased with his team’s form in the post-match interview after the Everton loss.
