Rio Ferdinand has given a glowing verdict on Chelsea’s Reece James after selecting him as the Premier League’s young player of the season.
James, who’s had an injury-hit campaign, has been absolutely brilliant when available to play.
The 22-year-old’s continued his development into a key first-team player at Stamford Bridge, with his manager Thomas Tuchel trusting him in both full-back and centre-back positions.
He’s at his very best in his preferred right wing-back role, though.
His contribution in the Premier League this season is five goals and six assists in 22 league appearances.
Ferdinand has waxed lyrical about the quality of the Chelsea and England star:
“I’m going to go Reece James [for Premier League young player of the season]. I just think the importance that he has in this team, when he doesn’t play in that team now they miss him massively. He has a massive impact in that team,” Ferdinand said.
“I watched him at Old Trafford the other day… he was treating some Man United players like boys. That’s how good he is, how comfortable he looks now.
“I’ve seen him on loan at Wigan playing centre-back, playing in midfield. He’s so versatile. His passing range is off the charts.
“Just his all-round general play, the composure, the physicality, his defending one-v-one. I think he’s got everything.”

No ceiling
It looks like there’s no limit on what James can become.
It’s been another rollercoaster season at Stamford Bridge both on and off the pitch, but the rise of James into becoming an even better player has to be one of the standouts.
The wing-back’s reportedly in line for a new Blues contract, something which is an absolute no-brainer.
Ferdinand mentioned a recent league performance from James against Manchester United, with opposition manager Ralf Rangnick highlighting him for praise afterwards.
It’s clear to see how much more confidence he’s now got with the ball at his feet. He’s strong, quick, and so influential within Thomas Tuchel’s set up.
There’s so many great young players shining across the Premier League division, particularly English ones.
It’s great to hear James getting the recognition he deserves.
