'Interesting': Paul Merson claims Chelsea might sell midfielder this summer, they'll want around £70m

Paul Merson is predicting that Chelsea may think about cashing in on their midfielder N’Golo Kante this summer.

Kante, who’s out of contract at Stamford Bridge in 2023, continues to be a key player in the Blues squad.

The all-action central midfielder has played 39 games across all competitions this season, albeit he’s had the odd injury issue crop up.

It’s been reported that Chelsea will make it one of their priorities under the next ownership to tie the Frenchman down to a new contract.

However, Merson wouldn’t be surprised to see him leaving west London after an “underwhelming” individual season. He thinks he would cost at least £70million, though.

Your Club's SURPRISE Star This Season

“Kante’s situation is an interesting one, and I think Chelsea might cash in on him if they get a sizable bid of around £70-80 million for him this summer. With the way he plays, it’s hard to hit the heights every year in the Premier League, but it goes without saying that he has been a bit underwhelming this season,” Merson wrote.

Chelsea must keep Kante

Yes, Kante’s not been at his amazing best over the course of the 2021/22 campaign. There’s still been enough quality performances to show he’s got plenty more in the tank left.

The 31-year-old has to go down as one of the club’s greatest ever midfielders, with Joe Cole previously suggesting he could even surpass Frank Lampard’s legacy as an overall player.

It’s going to require a major shift in thinking the day Kante leaves the Bridge.

He’s a player that still strikes fear into opponents with his work in the centre of the park, whether that be breaking the lines with quick dribbles or intercepting play.

Let’s hope it’s a while still before the conversation is needed on how to replace a very unique midfielder.
