'Just doesn't produce': ESPN pundit criticises 26-year-old Chelsea player after Saturday's loss

Steve Nicol has criticised Chelsea’s Timo Werner after his latest performance on Saturday.

Chelsea made the worst possible start after the international break by suffering a heavy 4-1 defeat at home to Brentford.

The Blues were on a five-game winning streak in the Premier League going into the Brentford match, but that’s come to an end in emphatic fashion.

It’s a hectic fixture schedule in April for Chelsea, so they’ve not got much time to dwell on today’s result. Up next, a huge Champions League quarter-final tie at home to Real Madrid on Wednesday.

ESPN pundit Nicol wasn’t impressed with Chelsea’s attack against Brentford, especially German forward Werner.

The 26-year-old was included in the starting line-up before being substituted off 20 minutes into the second-half after a minimal contribution.

“I guess the more worrying for me is the fact that going forward they’re not putting the ball in the back of the net the way they should be… Timo Werner gets a start and again just doesn’t produce,” Nicol told ESPN.

Chelsea future should hang in balance

Werner yet again wasted an opportunity to impress in the team.

He scored once and started back-to-back games for Germany during the international break, but he just can’t seem to find any kind of form at club level.

The speedster looks massively out of favour right now, with plenty of the fanbase growing increasingly frustrated with him.

Interestingly, it’s been reported recently that Chelsea wouldn’t stand in Werner’s way if he pushed for an exit at the end of the season.

It feels like something major needs to happen between now and the end of the season for him to get his career at Stamford Bridge back on track.
