Paul Merson is stunned that more clubs have not been in the race to sign Mason Mount from Chelsea this summer.

Mason Mount, 24, is about to say his goodbyes to Chelsea and join Manchester United.

Journalist Fabrizio Romano has claimed on Twitter today that Mount has completed his medical and will soon be unveiled by Man United as their new signing.

The attacking midfielder will go down as one of the best talents to come through the Blues academy at Cobham, but the next chapter of his career will continue in Manchester.

Sky Sports pundit Merson suggests that United are making a brilliant addition to their squad this summer with Mount.

In fact, he’s shocked that more teams have not been pushing hard to sign the England international, who was entering the final year of his contract at Chelsea.

“I cannot believe only one club was after Mount. He’s proven in the Premier League, before his injury last season he was nailed on to start for England and he was the best player in a good Chelsea team,” Merson told Sky Sports.

“If I supported Manchester United, I’d be more than happy with the signing. He gives you energy, gets on the ball, on the half-turn, looks forward all the time. The kid is a proper player, a special player.”

We did hear some transfer speculation earlier this summer linking clubs to Mount, but United have emerged as the main real frontrunners in the past few weeks.

The Guardian claimed a couple of weeks ago that Thomas Tuchel’s Bayern Munich held plans to try hijack United’s move for Mount.

It looks like he’ll be playing in Erik ten Hag’s side next season, though.

The Blues may feel it’s quite straightforward to replace Mount after his quiet 2022/23 campaign, but he’s a two-time Chelsea player of the year with so much quality.
