‘They’ve got to’: Gary Neville urges Todd Boehly to make 51-year-old Chelsea’s next manager

Gary Neville believes unlike some other names with whom Chelsea have been linked, Mauricio Pochettino would be the most suitable candidate to succeed Graham Potter.

Following the confirmation of Potter’s exit on Sunday, Chelsea are understandably considering their options despite the appointment of Bruno Saltor as an interim head coach.

While a new manager is unlikely to help Chelsea reach a top-four finish, they still have something to fight for in the Champions League.

At the same time, the long-term project, especially after their recent spending spree, should be the main focus for the Chelsea ownership group when making any decision.

Neville argued that this is exactly why Pochettino is the ideal candidate for the Chelsea job.

“Everything Boehly is saying is that they have done their spending,” the former England international told Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football.

“They have spent £600 million and they have done their spending for the next three years.

“If they sign [Zinedine] Zidane, [Diego] Simeone, or [Luis] Enrique they are going to want another £300 million because they won’t like some of the players they have signed.

“They have got to appoint a manager who is going to inherit and like the squad that they have.

“I think that man is Pochettino.”

Pochettino’s connection with London rivals Tottenham Hotspur would likely make him an unpopular choice among Chelsea fans, but he clearly proved that he could work with a young squad.

The Argentinean has also had some experience working with some of the biggest names in world football at Paris Saint-Germain, so it might help him deal with egos in the dressing room.
