Nicolas Jackson will regret what he said about Chelsea nearly a year ago as Newcastle weigh up move

Nicolas Jackson will feel a bit disappointed with Chelsea right now, with the Club World Cup winners having practically replaced him.

Chelsea signed Liam Delap from Ipswich Town earlier on in the summer and then went on to purchase Joao Pedro from Brighton & Hove Albion.

After his success at the Club World Cup, you would now expect Pedro to start in the Blues’ first Premier League game of the season against Crystal Palace.

Jackson was sent off against Newcastle United towards the end of last season and is still serving a ban so will be unavailable for the London derby.

But had he been, the likelihood is that he would have been the third-choice striker behind Pedro and Delap based on Enzo Maresca‘s team selections at the Club World Cup. It is not something that the 24-year-old would have seen coming.

Nicolas Jackson claimed Chelsea had ‘confidence’ in him

Jackson has come in for a lot of criticism since his arrival at Chelsea from Villarreal in 2023, with his finishing often being scrutinised.

However, Chelsea looked ready to persist with the Senegal international and handed him a contract extension just one year after he had signed for the club.

Jackson saw it as a sign that the English giants had confidence in him and said as much in an interview with Chelsea’s official club website after putting pen to paper on his new deal.

“I am feeling very good and am very happy to sign a new contract and stay at the club,” Jackson said. “It feels great the club has confidence in me. I am working very hard. I am very happy to extend my contract and stay here for many years.”

Fast forward to the present, though, and the former Villarreal man may regret saying that. Chelsea have shown anything but the above by deciding to sign two new centre-forwards.

Jackson could now depart Stamford Bridge, with Manchester United thought to be monitoring his situation. However, they are not the only Premier League outfit keeping an eye on him.

Nicolas Jackson now on Newcastle’s shortlist

Newcastle were linked with Jackson earlier this month, and that interest does not seem to have gone away.

With Alexander Isak’s future at St James’ Park uncertain, according to the Daily Mail, Jackson is one name on the Magpies’ shortlist of potential replacements for the Swede.

Newcastle fans are not keen on their club signing Jackson, while he probably did not envision a move to Tyneside a few months ago. But given what is happening at both teams right now, Jackson joining Eddie Howe’s side could make a lot of sense.
