Chelsea signing one Premier League striker before the transfer window closes is starting to look really unlikely.
Newcastle United’s Callum Wilson has been heavily linked with a move to Chelsea, with journalist Simon Phillips claiming that the Blues recently made an enquiry about signing him.
However, his manager Eddie Howe has told ChronicleLive and other outlets that he is surprised about all of the noise surrounding the player’s future and that there is nothing in the rumours.
While Wilson is currently out injured, he has made a big contribution to Newcastle this season. In 14 Premier League appearances, the forward has scored seven goals.
The Magpies signed Wilson from Bournemouth for £20m (BBC Sport) back in 2020.
Eddie Howe quashes Callum Wilson to Chelsea talk
Howe is adamant that there is nothing in the speculation about Wilson joining Chelsea this month.
“Callum is 100% committed just like Kieran Trippier,” the Newcastle boss said. “That is why I was surprised by the noise about Callum.
“He is currently injured. From his perspective and our perspective, there is nothing in it. We had one fit striker on Friday, he is our second fit striker, and we are desperate to get him back.”

Will Chelsea sign Callum Wilson before the transfer deadline?
With Chelsea, you can never rule anything out. However, based on Howe’s words, it looks like Wilson will be staying at St James’ Park.
It is a shame, as the 31-year-old could have been a really good short-term option for Mauricio Pochettino‘s side.
As Wilson has shown this season, when the England international is fit, he does score goals.
The problem is a lot of the time Wilson is actually not fit, but a goal record like his makes him worth a gamble. It does not look like Chelsea are going to get the opportunity to take a punt on him, though.
