Bashir Humphreys has impressed Mauricio Pochettino at Chelsea – and is now in talks over a new contract at Stamford Bridge.

That is according to the Evening Standard.

So, what is the latest on Bashir Humphreys and Chelsea? Let’s take a look…

What’s the story?

Well, the 20-year-old was among the standout players as Chelsea faced a number of top sides during their tour of the United States.

Only Christopher Nkunku, Raheem Sterling, Kepa Arrizabalaga and Conor Gallagher were handed more minutes than Humphreys out in the US, so it goes without saying that Pochettino took a liking to him.

Now, the Argentine has encouraged Chelsea to tie the England Under-20 international down to a new contract, before finding him a loan move so he can continue his development.

The Evening Standard believe Humphreys – who has only ever made one competitive appearance for Chelsea, which came in the FA Cup – is allowed to choose where he wants to go on loan, and is currently weighing up his options.

It is said that Coventry City are one potential destination for the centre-back this summer, who only has 12 months remaining on his current contract.

Bashir Humphreys move is sensible by Chelsea

In our view, this is great squad management by Chelsea.

Humphreys is unlikely to get many – if any – opportunities at Stamford Bridge next season, with Thiago Silva, Benoit Badiashile, Levi Colwill, Axel Disasi and Trevoh Chalobah ahead of him in the pecking order.

Chelsea also do not have any European football on the schedule next season, so the Exeter-born defender will have ever fewer chances to play senior football in west London.

Therefore, a loan deal makes perfect sense, so too does the plan to extend his contract, as Chelsea’s tour of the United States proved that the Blues have a promising talent in Humphreys.
