Chelsea target Axel Disasi is now close to leaving Monaco – although he could be heading for Manchester United rather than Stamford Bridge.

That is according to Foot Mercato.

So, what is the latest on Chelsea and Axel Disasi? Let’s take a look…

What’s the story?

Well – according to RMC Sport – Chelsea are tempted to make a move for the France international after allowing Kalidou Koulibaly to leave for Saudi Arabia.

The French news outlet added that insiders at Stamford Bridge are huge fans of Disasi.

Now – however – the Monaco No.6 could be joining Manchester United.

Foot Mercato explain how the Red Devils are now pushing hard to sign Disasi after it became clear that Kim Min-jae is heading to Bayern Munich rather than Old Trafford.

Talks are ongoing between Manchester United and Monaco over a deal for the Frenchman, and while Foot Mercato do not state whether these discussions are going well, it is said that the 25-year-old defender is “very close” to leaving.

Of course, that doesn’t mean Chelsea can’t still hijack negotiations.

Disasi enjoyed an impressive 2022/23 campaign, scoring six goals while also providing four assists from centre-back.

Chelsea must leave Disasi to Manchester United

In our view, Chelsea have no need for another central defender, even with Koulibaly leaving.

Mauricio Pochettino already has Thiago Silva – who Disasi has actually been compared to – as well as Benoit Badiashile, Trevoh Chalobah, Levi Colwill and Wesley Fofana.

Aside from Silva, those are some of the best young central defenders across Europe, so they should be developed rather than see another player arrive as competition.

Crucially, Pochettino only tends to use two centre-backs in a four-man defence, so the Argentine will already need to make a tough decision on who to start.

Signing Disasi would make that task even more difficult – in our view, reinforcements in attack and midfield are far more necessary.
