Tammy Abraham is now expected to leave Roma after Chelsea held talks about bringing the striker back to Stamford Bridge.

That is according to the Telegraph.

It comes after Tammy Abraham and Jose Mourinho suffered defeat to Sevilla in the Europa League final on Wednesday.

What’s the story?

Well, the financial impact of failing to qualify for the Champions League means Roma will need to make sales this summer, and Abraham is one player they are willing to offload.

It comes after journalist Simon Phillips revealed on Substack that Chelsea have held internal talks about signing the England international.

The Telegraph state that Abraham is expected to leave Roma, and the Italian giants feel they can recoup a large portion of the £34m they handed Chelsea for his signature in August 2021.

Chelsea negotiated a buyback clause in that original agreement worth £70m.

However – according to Il Messaggero – the Blues will not be triggering that option, as they feel he isn’t worth a sum that high and can be signed for less.

Abraham endured a difficult 2022/23 campaign at Roma, scoring just nine goals in 53 appearances.

It has been strange to see the 25-year-old go backwards, as he looked set to become an icon in Italy after netting 27 goals in 53 games last term.

Chelsea have a good chance of signing Abraham

In our view, if Chelsea are serious about bringing Abraham back to west London, there is a good chance of the deal going through.

The London-born striker told Tutto Mercato Web that he still speaks to many Chelsea players, with Reece James asking him to make a return to Stamford Bridge on a regular basis.

Abraham said: “I still talk to so many Chelsea players, (Reece) James always tells me to come back. We grew up together and have known each other for years – players like (Mason) Mount, (Declan) Rice and (Eddie) Nketiah.”

Abraham knows Chelsea well, so he wouldn’t need any time to settle, and the presence of Mauricio Pochettino – someone who the likes of Harry Kane have previously expressed great admiration for – could persuade him to come back.

Be sure to keep an eye on this situation, as the Roma No.9’s future should soon become clear.
