Jermaine Pennant has told Chelsea they are requesting a “bargain” sum for Mason Mount as Manchester United attempt to sign the England international.

The 40-year-old was speaking about the Chelsea No.19 on talkSPORT.

So, what was said about Mason Mount in full? Let’s take a look…

What’s the story?

Well, whispers from Old Trafford have suggested that Manchester United are growing frustrated at Chelsea for their stance on the 24-year-old.

The Red Devils have already submitted a £45m bid and a £55m bid, but Chelsea have rejected both offers as they hold out for £65m – a sum Manchester United feel is unreasonable seeing as Mount only has 12 months left on his contract.

Nevertheless, Pennant believes Chelsea are well within their rights to demand a lofty fee for the Blues academy graduate, comparing the situation to that of James Ward-Prowse at Southampton.

He told talkSPORT: “He’s in the last year of his contract but he’s also a fantastic player. I think they’re right to hold out for more. I like to put things into perspective, so if you’re looking at £50m for Ward-Prowse in the Championship with Southampton, then around £55m for Mount is a steal, a bargain.”

Manchester United have threatened to walk away from negotiations unless Chelsea lower the asking price – according to The Times – with Moises Caicedo an alternative option for Erik ten Hag.

Chelsea could sell Mason Mount elsewhere

Manchester United are not the only club who admire Mount – who Kylian Mbappe once called a “superb” footballer.

The Guardian believe Bayern Munich sense an opportunity to hijack talks as Manchester United baulk at Chelsea’s asking price.

Thomas Tuchel is said to be keen on a reunion with Mount at the Allianz Arena.

Interestingly, the Guardian add that Chelsea may be willing to lower their asking price for Bayern Munich, given the fact they are not a direct rival.

Be sure to keep an eye on this situation, as more bids are expected to be made for Mount this summer.
