Ally McCoist thinks it’s “absolute madness” that Chelsea will reportedly pay £9million to sign Joao Felix on loan from Atletico Madrid.

The Felix transfer saga has ramped up quickly this week, with speculation now pointing towards the 23-year-old forward moving to Stamford Bridge.

According to The Times, Atletico are close to loaning out Felix to Chelsea for the rest of the season. It’s going to cost the Blues a £9million loan fee, though.

The Portugal international is a highly-rated attacker that was sensational during a short spell at Benfica at the start of his senior career. Since then, he’s never really unlocked his full potential in Madrid.

Joao Felix loan price

TalkSPORT pundit McCoist isn’t too sure that Felix is the right man for Chelsea during this January transfer window.

In particular, he’s raised his concerns around Graham Potter’s side coughing up such a big loan fee.

“That’s an interesting one. I can’t believe we’re paying £9million for a loan now… Absolute madness,” McCoist told talkSPORT.

“I like Joao Felix. I don’t think he’s the answer to Chelsea’s problems. They need a centre-forward. Plus, I don’t think he’s consistent enough.

“I watched him closely in the World Cup, and I thought he did some brilliant things. I thought he had one or two good games. But he’s one of those players who leaves you wanting a little bit more.”

It’s a massive amount of money when you’re talking about paying for a short-term loan. Atletico’s response may be that this is an individual that cost £113million in 2019, though.

He could definitely inject some new life and quality into a Chelsea frontline that’s run out of ideas.

His pace, dribbling and flair could torment opposition defences. However, his arrival really needs to come with some end product.
