Liverpool now expect Moises Caicedo to join Chelsea – after the Reds made contact with Brighton over a deal for the Ecuador international.

That is according to The Athletic.

Well, this has been a hectic Thursday so far – to say the least.

Chelsea have already agreed a deal to sign Tyler Adams from Leeds United – as revealed by Fabrizio Romano – and there was also a £48m bid for Romeo Lavia made on Wednesday night.

Now – according to The Athletic – a deal for Caicedo seems to be moving in the right direction.

It is said that Liverpool asked about the South American – who John Barnes called a “fantastic” player – after struggling to agree a fee with Southampton for Romeo Lavia.

Despite Liverpool’s interest, The Athletic mention that senior figures at Anfield still expect Caicedo to join Chelsea, given the amount of groundwork the Blues have put into the deal.

Chelsea have chased the 21-year-old for the entire summer, with David Ornstein claiming that the Blues have seen multiple bids rejected, which were worth £60m, £65m, £70m and then £80m.

In our view, Liverpool’s enquiry about Caicedo should spark Chelsea into action.

As we approach transfer deadline day, clubs are becoming more and more desperate, which will inevitably see some sides bid silly amounts for targets.

Therefore, Chelsea run the risk of missing out on Caicedo if they do not up their £80m bid with an offer closer to Brighton’s £100m asking price.

It would be a disaster if Chelsea missed out on their No.1 target after spending the entire summer working on a deal, so it is now time for the Blues to accelerate negotiations with Brighton.
