‘Amazing’ Chelsea player was open to leaving the club before conversation with Mauricio Pochettino

Mauricio Pochettino played a big role in keeping Chelsea’s Levi Colwill at the club last summer.

That is according to speculation this week.

Levi Colwill, 20, signed a six-year contract at Stamford Bridge last summer before the start of this season.

The left-footed defender, who’s a product of the Blues academy, has since been enjoying his debut campaign in Chelsea’s first team.

He’s the club’s joint-top appearance maker so far this season, along with Conor Gallagher.

Chelsea head coach Mauricio Pochettino has relied on the England defender heavily, whether that’s at centre-back or left-back.

TalkSPORT has claimed today that Colwill was open to the idea of leaving Chelsea last year, but he was convinced by Pochettino to stay because of the promise he’d be a first-team regular. In fairness, that’s exactly how the 2023/24 campaign is playing out.

In addition, the report mentions that Liverpool do retain an interest in Colwill right now after previously wanting to sign him last summer before his contract extension.

It is explained that the Blues could be vulnerable to offers for the 20-year-old youngster because of the Premier League Profitability and Sustainability rules.

Despite the financial upside of cashing in on academy graduate, we wouldn’t even contemplate allowing Colwill to leave the club.

We think Colwill’s having a steady first year in Chelsea’s senior squad, but there’s so much more to come from him once Pochettino plays him in his preferred centre-half position.

The youngster’s been doing his best covering at full-back. It’s a role that a switched on winger can catch him out in, though.

Speaking via Football.London earlier in the season, Pochettino described Colwill as “amazing” and “very mature”.

It feels to us like he’s part of the core group of players that Chelsea’s head coach is comfortable building the side around.

Let’s hope Pochettino can have another word in Colwill’s ear to silence these latest Liverpool rumours.
