Barcelona director Deco tried to sign £58m Chelsea player last year

In the last two summer transfer windows, Chelsea spent a lot of money as they looked to improve their squad.

This summer, Chelsea splashed the cash on the likes of Pedro Neto and Joao Felix, with the former costing the club £54m.

In 2023, they also spent big on Moises Caicedo, Cole Palmer and Romeo Lavia. However, if Barcelona sporting director and former Chelsea star Deco had it his way, then one of those players would have ended up at the Spotify Camp Nou.

Lavia has barely played for Chelsea since joining the club because of injuries, but Jason Cundy thinks Lavia will become a top player one day.

Barcelona were interested in Romeo Lavia

Chelsea beat Liverpool to Lavia’s signature in the summer of 2023, but it does not look like the Merseyside club were the only other side who were interested in the midfielder.

According to Sport, Deco wanted to sign Lavia for Barcelona and made an offer for the 20-year-old following Southampton’s relegation.

However, the same outlet claims that Barcelona were only able to bring Lavia in on loan, not being able to match the £58m bid Chelsea made for him.

Lavia could feature against Liverpool this weekend after returning from injury just before the international break.

Could Barcelona sign Romeo Lavia in the future?

Chelsea only bought Lavia last year and again, he has barely kicked a ball for the Blues.

Since his arrival at Stamford Bridge, the Belgian has only made four appearances for Chelsea. Considering that and the amount of money that the club invested in Lavia, they will not want to sell him yet.

However, even though he is fit again, Lavia faces a challenge getting into Enzo Maresca‘s team. Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez are nailed on starters, having cost even more money than Lavia.

With that in mind, perhaps there could be a chance for Barcelona to sign the former Southampton man in the future if he cannot break into the Chelsea side.
