Borussia Dortmund face a challenge signing Chelsea defender Ian Maatsen.

The German club are long-standing admirers of Ian Maatsen, according to the Daily Mirror.

However, the outlet claims that Dortmund cannot afford to do a permanent deal in January, which complicates things.

Clubs are only allowed to have seven players out on loan overseas and Chelsea have already reached their limit.

It means that Dortmund are at risk of losing out on Maatsen to a Premier League club, who will be able to loan the 21-year-old left-back if they are not able to sign him permanently.

Ian Maatsen still likely to leave Chelsea

While a move to Dortmund looks very tricky at this moment in time, you would still expect Maatsen to depart Stamford Bridge in January.

He has barely played under Mauricio Pochettino this season and is not on a long-term contract, so Chelsea will not want to risk losing him for nothing.

Considering the above, both parties will probably conclude that a transfer next month is best.

It looks like it is going to be another busy transfer window in SW6, with Pochettino suggesting that new players could be brought in once the market reopens following his side’s 2-0 loss to Everton.

With Chelsea currently sitting 12th in the Premier League table, Pochettino seems determined to strengthen his squad.

The Blues’ strategy of just bringing in a whole batch of new players, practically a whole squad, is yet to bear any fruit, though. Will signing even more men really help the team?

It is quite clear, however, that Chelsea do need another striker minimum. Nicolas Jackson has really struggled at times this season, which is understandable, he is young and has just moved to the country, while Armando Broja is the same age as the Senegal international and is not always available.
