Borussia Dortmund are reportedly in talks with Chelsea over a deal for Ian Maatsen.

Ian Maatsen is one player who Chelsea could allow to leave the club next month with his contract running down.

According to Voetbal International, Dortmund are in discussions with the Blues to sign the left-back permanently or on loan. The same outlet has also claimed that he is happy to move to Germany.

Maatsen had the chance to leave Stamford Bridge during the summer but opted to stay. At the end of the last transfer window, the Evening Standard reported that Burnley had agreed to sign the 21-year-old on loan with a £31.5m obligation to buy.

However, it looks like he could still end up departing Mauricio Pochettino‘s side.

Maatsen could be a good signing for Dortmund. The Netherlands U21 international is versatile and acquiring him does not seem like it will be the most expensive operation, especially if they can get him on loan.

Ultimately, you can see why Dortmund would want him. As for Chelsea, it is just as easy to understand why they would sell.

With Levi Colwill, Ben Chilwell and Marc Cucurella at Pochettino’s disposal, the Argentine does have options in the left-back position, though Maatsen has not played there this season.

Chelsea, of course, also spent a lot of money in the last transfer window. Making sales to stay in line with FFP regulations may be necessary.

Maatsen is not a bad footballer, but he appears to be at Chelsea at the wrong time.

As well as Dortmund, Maatsen has also been linked with a move to Ajax. He started in the Blues’ 2-1 win against Crystal Palace earlier this week but, at this point, it would be a bit of a surprise if he remained at Stamford Bridge beyond January — a transfer looks to be best for everyone.
