Brighton are now showing ‘late interest’ in signing £50m Chelsea player

Brighton have reportedly shown interest in Chelsea’s £50m player in the final days of this transfer window.

Now that we’re into the final two days of the summer window, the speculation is flying around about the futures of several individuals in the Blues squad.

Chelsea and Brighton are Premier League rivals who know each other very well. In fact, the clubs have conducted several pieces of business in the last couple of years.

The likes of Moises Caicedo, Marc Cucurella and Robert Sanchez all left the Amex Stadium for Stamford Bridge in recent times. Incidentally, speaking via talkSPORT last month, Gabriel Agbonblahor admitted Cucurella’s proven him wrong as a player.

Brighton interest in Ben Chilwell

According to journalist Simon Phillips via his Substack on Thursday, Brighton have shown some “late interest” in signing Chelsea’s Ben Chilwell.

He’s explained that there’s uncertainty on whether or not the 27-year-old defender would even be interested in joining the Seagulls, but they’re a late suitor for him in this window. If the left-back stays put at Chelsea beyond Friday’s deadline, he won’t be playing first-team football for the rest of 2024.

Phillips adds that there’s nothing advanced at this moment regarding Brighton’s interest in Chilwell. Let’s wait and see if something develops in the coming hours, though.

When fit and firing, Chilwell has proven in the past he’s a quality full-back in the Premier League. Unfortunately, the £50m man (Sky Sports) has lost form and fitness in the past 18 months, plus he’s now been isolated by Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca.

In terms of Brighton’s interest in the Blues star, the one thing that doesn’t make too much sense is they only just signed Fenerbahce star Ferdi Kadioglu in a £25m deal (The Athletic). The 24-year-old Turkey international is a left-back by trade, albeit he’s got the versatility to play further forward in midfield as well.

Ben Chilwell can regain England spot if he moves

For Chilwell, he should look at the latest England squad named by interim manager Lee Carsley on Thursday and think there’s definitely a route back for him into the international scene if he moves.

Remarkably, England have no recognised left-back in their latest squad. It was a problem throughout Euro 2024 in the summer as well with right-back Kieran Trippier often covering on the left.

Chilwell should be desperate to find a way out of Chelsea in the next 48 hours, even if it’s just somewhere else on loan.
