Chelsea and Manchester United both set sights on international left-back

Chelsea are now being linked with a new name in the transfer rumour mill as a potential defensive target.

There’s pretty much at least two quality options per position when you go through the Chelsea squad, including in the backline. However, the Blues are tipped to be monitoring a European defender.

Chelsea have been slightly weak at the back in the opening months of the season, conceding eight goals in their first seven Premier League matches. For what it’s worth, the team’s free-scoring attack is regularly bailing them out of trouble.

Speaking last month via ESPN, Frank Leboeuf urged Chelsea to stop playing out from the back. We’d be surprised to see a drastic change of style, though.

Chelsea tracking David Moller Wolfe

According to TEAMtalk, Chelsea are looking at AZ Alkmaar defender David Moller Wolfe as a transfer target.

It is understood that the Blues and Manchester United are among a number of Premier League sides currently tracking the 22-year-old left-back.

The report claims that Dutch club AZ are bracing themselves for interest in their young star in the ‘near future’.

Apparently, Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca would be keen to sign another left-back if the club ends up getting rid of Ben Chilwell in January. As it stands, the £200,000-a-week defender (Spotrac) is out of favour at Stamford Bridge, sitting behind both Marc Cucurella and Renato Veiga in the pecking order to start.

Who is David Moller Wolfe?

Wolfe may be an unfamiliar name to English audiences, but he’s enjoying a great time recently for both club and country.

First of all, the young left-back is an ever-present for AZ, creating two assists in 10 appearances across all competitions this season. As well as the Eredivisie league, his team are also competing in this year’s Europa League campaign.

Wolfe also has eight senior international caps for Norway, where he’s teammates with superstar striker Erling Haaland.

We wouldn’t say that Chelsea needs to go out and sign another left-back, even if Chilwell goes, but it’s an interesting new name to keep an eye out for.
