Chelsea are more likely to sell £62m player rather than Ben Chilwell next summer

Chelsea could be prepared to get rid of one of their current left-backs to sign Bayern Munich star Alphonso Davies.

That is according to journalist Simon Phillips.

On his Substack Si Phillips Talks Chelsea, Phillips claimed that one of Marc Cucurella or Ben Chilwell “might be sacrificed” to help facilitate the arrival of Alphonso Davies next summer.

And out of the two, the journalist says the Spaniard is actually the more likely to leave Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea signed Cucurella from Brighton & Hove Albion for £62m last year, as reported by The Guardian.

Should Chelsea sell Marc Cucurella to sign Alphonso Davies?

Yes, it is a no-brainer really. Has Cucurella improved in recent weeks? Without a doubt, he has probably been one of Chelsea’s best players this season.

As per WhoScored, the 25-year-old is currently making 3.3 tackles per game in the Premier League, which is the highest average in Mauricio Pochettino‘s squad.

Although he has admitted that it has been difficult for him, Cucurella has also been able to fill in at right-back, further showing his worth to this team.

However, Davies is on a completely different level, at least going forward. The Canada international is one of the best attacking full-backs in the world.

A full-back pairing of him and Reece James could be something else.

So, if Chelsea have to sacrifice Cucurella or even Chilwell for Davies, then so be it. The Bayern star would represent quite the upgrade.

With that being said, Cucurella and Chilwell are far from being terrible left-backs, while Levi Colwill has done a good job there this term. If they cannot land Davies, Pochettino can still be happy with what he has got. His main concern with that position will probably just be keeping Chilwell fit, with the England international picking up another bad injury recently.
