There’s a chance that Ian Maatsen could end up leaving Chelsea next month.

Ian Maatsen, who’s just 21, forced his way into Chelsea’s first-team squad this season after a successful time at Burnley last year.

He’s an exciting left-back by trade that showed his versatility in pre-season to play higher up the pitch, with Blues head coach Mauricio Pochettino preferring him on the wings.

However, the Dutch wide man has been restricted to mostly cameo roles from the bench in his nine appearances so far this campaign.

January exit firmly on the cards

Football.London has claimed this week that Chelsea have decided they’ll look to sell Maatsen in next month’s January window.

It is explained that the club tried to sell the 21-year-old in the summer, but the player himself decided to stay and fight for his position. Now, he’s had a change of mind and is expected to try leave in the New Year.

The report adds that Chelsea know this may represent the last good chance to sell Maatsen for a good fee as he enters the final 18 months of his contract.

Football.London’s report says the Blues are ‘determined’ to make his sale happen in January.

Chelsea determined to sell Ian Maatsen

Despite us quite rating Maatsen as a player, it makes sense for all parties if he can find a new home in the upcoming transfer window.

We think Pochettino has had plenty of opportunities to use him in a left-back role he excelled in last season for Burnley, but it’s obvious he doesn’t fancy him in that position.

Our feeling is he can join a Premier League rival and make a very positive impact. Hopefully, he goes for a decent chunk of money as well.

Chelsea accepted an offer from Burnley in the summer to sign Maatsen on loan with an obligation to buy for £32million (Evening Standard), but the player decided to stay in West London. It’ll be interesting to see how much the club can sell him on for.
