Chelsea are scouting four USA players at World Cup but Xabi Alonso should only sign one

There is a bit of a connection between Chelsea and the USA national team, who are doing well at this year’s World Cup.

Part of their success has been down to former Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino, who is currently the coach of the Stars and Stripes.

Christian Pulisic has also been representing the USA at the World Cup, another ex-employee of Chelsea.

Following the sale of Pulisic to AC Milan in 2023, the Blues no longer have any Americans in their first-team squad. However, that could change this summer.

Chelsea should only sign Weston McKennie despite also scouting Tyler Adams, Folarin Balogun and Malik Tillman

According to journalist Simon Phillips, Chelsea have been scouting Juventus and USA midfielder Weston McKennie at the World Cup.

Do you want to see Pep Chavarria, Marco Palestra or Jorrel Hato at left-back next season?

Phillips has claimed on Si Phillips Talks Chelsea that the Blues have been keeping a close eye on McKennie, Tyler Adams, Folarin Balogun and Malik Tillman.

It was recently reported that Chelsea are interested in Balogun, but McKennie is the USA player the Club World Cup holders should be focusing on.

Chelsea are in the market for a midfielder, and McKennie could be perfect for them. He is 27 now and has played more than 200 games for Juventus, one of European football’s biggest clubs.

Xabi Alonso is clearly looking for more experience, hence Chelsea’s interest in Granit Xhaka. But McKennie clearly has that as well.

He has also played in the Premier League before after a loan spell at Leeds United, but what really stands out about the USA international is his versatility.

McKennie is a midfielder but was often used as a wing-back last season. He could end up being a pretty useful player for Alonso, who used wing-backs during his time at Bayer Leverkusen.

Chelsea have other priorities right now, but if McKennie continues to impress at the World Cup, perhaps the Blues will make a move for him.

Chelsea have targeted his teammate Adams in the past, but McKennie looks like he has a bit more to offer.
