Chelsea can sign ‘outstanding’ defender back for £35m, the club do admire him

Chelsea have the chance to bring Tino Livramento back to Stamford Bridge this summer after Southampton were relegated.

That is according to The Athletic.

So, what is the latest on Tino Livramento and Chelsea? Let’s take a look…

What’s the story?

Well, the Blues sold the 20-year-old to Southampton for just £5m back in August 2021.

However, Chelsea successfully negotiated a buyback clause and also a sell-on fee during talks with the Saints.

That buyback clause becomes active this summer – according to The Athletic – and those at Stamford Bridge could well decide to trigger it, as it is said that Livramento remains admired by people at Chelsea.

It is also explained that Chelsea’s buyback clause is worth £50m.

However – as detailed by The Athletic – a deal can be struck for around £35m due to Chelsea’s sell-on clause.

The exact percentage of this sell-on clause is not specified in the story.

Newcastle are the side most keen to sign Livramento, who was once called “outstanding” by Paul Merson, and have offered Southampton £23m for the England Under-21 international.

Chelsea do not need Livramento

In our view, Chelsea would be foolish to trigger Livramento’s buyback clause.

Mauricio Pochettino already has Reece James to play at right-back, and has Malo Gusto to provide competition for the England international in that area.

The Blues spent £26.3m to sign the 20-year-old from Lyon in January, so it would be bizarre to buy Livramento as well and have three quality right-backs competing for one spot.

Of course, if Pochettino decides to use James in midfield, then perhaps a move for Livramento would make more sense.

Nevertheless, a sum of £35m is a lot to spend on a position which is not in desperate need of reinforcements – that money should be put towards a striker or a new central midfielder, in our view.

Nevertheless, be sure to keep an eye on Livramento’s situation, as Chelsea are set to bank millions even if he moves elsewhere, thanks to the sell-on clause.
