Chelsea risk missing out on one central defender to rivals Liverpool, who are having to start to think about life after Virgil van Dijk.

Chelsea may have to sign a new centre-back in the summer. Wesley Fofana and Benoit Badiashile keep on getting injured, while Axel Disasi will be expected to leave the club after being allowed to join Aston Villa on loan at the end of the last transfer window.

He could have options, with Tottenham having tried to sign Disasi on deadline day before his eventual switch to Villa.

But as well as Chelsea, Liverpool could also find themselves in a position where they need to buy another centre-half.

Chelsea face competition from Liverpool to sign David Hancko

In their search for a new centre-back, Chelsea may have to go head-to-head with Liverpool.

According to CaughtOffside, the Reds could make a move for Feyenoord’s David Hancko, who could be brought in to replace Van Dijk.

The Liverpool captain is yet to sign a new contract, with his existing deal expiring at the end of the season.

The same outlet claims that Chelsea also have Hancko on their radar and looked at him in January. It is thought that Hancko could cost his future club £42m.

Which club does David Hancko want to join?

Chelsea and Liverpool are not the only clubs who are thought to be interested in Hancko.

It is believed that Bayern Munich, Juventus and Premier League rivals Tottenham also want the 27-year-old.

For now, though, CaughtOffside’s report states that Hancko is yet to make a decision on his future. The chance to replace Van Dijk is likely to be too hard to turn down, however.

Hancko has been one of Feyenoord’s top performers this season. He has made 20 appearances in the Eredivisie and is making 2.8 clearances per game, which is the second-highest average in his squad, as per WhoScored.

A move to the Premier League now seems a strong possibility as Chelsea and Liverpool think about bringing in a new defender.
