Chelsea could revive interest in midfielder Thomas Tuchel tried to sign, they want him for the Club World Cup

Chelsea could have the chance to strengthen their squad ahead of this year’s Club World Cup.

FIFA have put in place a transfer window that will open before the tournament begins so teams competing in it can improve their sides, though the FA still need to give their approval over this transfer window before Chelsea and other English clubs can start signing players.

If they do, Ipswich Town’s Liam Delap is one signing Chelsea could make before heading to the US.

Delap, though, is not the only Premier League player the Blues could try to add to their Club World Cup squad.

Chelsea could revive interest in Edson Alvarez

Chelsea are currently being linked with West Ham United midfielder Edson Alvarez, and this is not the first time.

In fact, Chelsea actually made a bid for Alvarez back in 2022, when Thomas Tuchel was still manager. Tuchel and Chelsea failed with their offer and the 27-year-old eventually went on to join their London rivals.

According to Nacion Futbol, though, the Blues could revive their interest in Alvarez and try to sign him before the Club World Cup begins.

Enzo Maresca already has Moises Caicedo, Enzo Fernandez, Romeo Lavia and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall in his squad, while Andrey Santos is expected to be part of his first team next season following his excellent loan spell at Strasbourg.

Chelsea are bringing in Dario Essugo from Sporting Lisbon as well, so their midfield is already looking stacked.

Yet that has not stopped rumours about interest in Alvarez being revived in the summer.

He ended up at one of their London rivals, but Alvarez really wanted to join Chelsea when the Blues came knocking three years ago.

The Mexican was so disappointed about his failed move to Stamford Bridge that he “mourned” for a whole day.

When Alvarez discussed his failed Chelsea transfer, he said: “I mourned for one day and then showed I am a strong person, of course, the disappointment remained for a while. Of course the disappointment lasted for a while, but I believe that everything happens for a reason. Maybe it wasn’t the right time yet.”

What the above shows is that under Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali, Chelsea still have their pull.
