Chelsea look like they could miss out on one of their targets to Premier League rivals Manchester United.

At present, Chelsea are being linked with multiple defenders. It comes after injuries and uncertainty surrounding the futures of some players.

Renato Veiga, for example, could leave Stamford Bridge this month. Marseille remain one possible option for Veiga in his search for regular game time.

Should he depart, then Chelsea fans will be expecting a new left-back to be brought in.

Patrick Dorgu wants to join Manchester United

Last week, it was suggested that Chelsea could actually beat United to Patrick Dorgu’s signature.

Fast forward to now, though, and the Red Devils look to be firm favourites in the race for the Lecce defender.

According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, United are set to open formal talks with Lecce for Dorgu and the player is keen on a potential €40m (£33.8m) move to Old Trafford.

It is a blow for Chelsea, but Dorgu is not the only left-back on the club’s shortlist.

Chelsea’s list of Patrick Dorgu alternatives

It is not quite clear if Dorgu is Chelsea’s first-choice target for the left-back position, but whatever the case the Blues have also been looking at other names.

Journalist Simon Phillips says Chelsea have a five-man shortlist, with Milos Kerkez, Nuno Mendes, Bradley Locko and Antonee Robinson being the other four names the club have been considering.

Out of that quartet, Robinson has to be the left-back Chelsea go after. The USA international continues to perform excellently for Fulham.

This season, Robinson has recorded nine assists in 22 Premier League appearances, an amazing return for a full-back.

According to WhoScored, the 27-year-old is also making 2.7 tackles per game, which is the joint-highest average in Fulham’s squad. If Chelsea are planning to sign a new left-back during the January transfer window and they fail to land Dorgu, then everything has to go towards bringing Robinson in.
