Chelsea expected to confirm major signing ‘imminently’, Enzo Maresca’s wish has been granted

Chelsea have been tipped to be close to confirming their next major signing to bolster their first team squad for next season.

Enzo Maresca steered the Blues back to the Champions League in his first campaign in charge of the club, and deserves the backing of the board to take them to the next level.

However, the position of left wing has proven to actually be one of concern in the first team squad. Jadon Sancho has returned to Manchester United following his loan at Stamford Bridge, and Mykhailo Mudryk has been charged by the FA.

Maresca even admitted he needed a new winger in a press conference, and expected a deal to be done by the Blues.

Jamie Gittens has been frequently mentioned as a top target for the club, with Gittens agreeing personal terms over a long-term contract with the club before the first deadline.

Chelsea expected to confirm Jamie Gittens signing ‘imminently’

Chelsea have not been deterred by Bayern Munich’s interest in the youngster, and instead are now in a great position to close the deal.

According to journalist David Ornstein, the situation is set to be resolved ‘imminently’, with talks continuing in the United States between the two clubs during the Club World Cup.

He said to The Athletic: “A situation that could be resolved imminently features Borussia Dortmund’s English forward Jamie Gittens.

“Chelsea were unable to finalise a deal with the Bundesliga club for the 20-year-old before the closing of the pre-Club World Cup transfer window earlier this month.

“But despite that delay, talks have continued and there is hope an agreement can be reached swiftly, irrespective of suggestions Bayern Munich are also keen on Gittens.

“The former Manchester City player favours a move to Stamford Bridge and has remained fully committed to the idea of joining Enzo Maresca’s side. There is already an agreement in place between Gittens and Chelsea, with a seven-year contract ready to go when a club-to-club deal is reached.”

Chelsea hold their nerve against Borussia Dortmund in Gittens saga

Many expected Chelsea to have signed Gittens in time for him to be part of their squad for the Club World Cup, however this did not happen.

The Blues believed they were being hit with ‘Club World Cup tax’, which is also why they didn’t complete a deal to sign Mike Maignan.

Chelsea knew Dortmund would sell Gittens eventually, and it looks as if they have held their nerve and are set to get the deal done on their own terms.

This is a good sign for how Chelsea are being run, with Todd Boehly committed to not being bullied by other clubs in the transfer market.
