Chelsea could sign a new left-back this month after allowing Ian Maatsen to join Borussia Dortmund on loan.
With Ian Maatsen leaving Stamford Bridge, Chelsea now have a shortlist of potential left-back targets, according to journalist Simon Phillips.
And on his Substack Si Phillips Talks Chelsea, he claimed that Manchester United’s Luke Shaw is one name the club have discussed.
However, the journalist thinks it is a bit of a non-starter for various reasons and has described the player as an “absolute wildcard”.
Shaw joined United from Southampton back in 2014 in a £27m deal (BBC Sport). The 28-year-old, though, is actually a Chelsea fan, something confirmed by the Red Devils’ official website.

Luke Shaw on Chelsea’s shortlist
Shaw is quite a logical target. With Ben Chilwell constantly picking up injuries and centre-half Levi Colwill playing at left-back, Mauricio Pochettino probably could do with the arrival of a new left-sided defender. And Shaw could be perfect.
The England international is obviously someone with a plethora of Premier League experience. His injury record is a bit of a concern, but other than that, there are not too many other issues with Shaw.
It is hard to imagine United selling him, though, especially to one of their rivals and during the middle of the season.
Another left-back Chelsea could sign is Bayern Munich’s Alphonso Davies, but he is also someone who could be difficult to snap up.
The 23-year-old is being heavily linked with a move to Real Madrid, so the Blues may have to beat them in a transfer battle to land him. That will not be easy.
Whatever the case, be it Shaw, Davies or someone else, Chelsea should sign a new left-back. This month would be great, but the Blues are surely going to have to wait until the summer to have a chance of landing someone like Shaw or Davies. Players of that calibre are rarely on the market in January.
